2016 Spencer Award recipients named
The recipients of the 2016 Spencer Award are Tom Kaspar and David and Corrine Williams. Kaspar, a soil scientist with the USDA-ARS National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, has been researching cover crops for nearly 30 years. The Williams couple are long-time advocates of sustainable farming, having farmed for 60 years in Page County.
As the Leopold Center commemorates its 30th anniversary in 2017, each issue this year will include guest essayists who will contribute their thoughts about the impact of the Center on their personal lives and agriculture in Iowa. Neil Hamilton reflects on the last 30 years of the Center and Lisa Schulte Moore offers insight into how the Leopold Center has been a part of her career.
Research grants awarded in 2017
The competitive grants program at the Leopold Center has awarded grants for 21 new research and demonstration projects to begin in 2017, totaling $1.4 million.
FoodCorps Iowa program in Ottumwa helps children and their families try new foods. A research project that was recently completed looked at fresh food options at nontraditional retail outlets, and graduate research assistant Ahna Kruzic looked factors to expand local food systems in six Iowa communities.
